Getting Started PERIOD....

Not asking for tips (YET). I just want to know which programs I would need to create a 3d chatroom, with audio capabilities. Not live streaming audio but user uploaded audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanx - Buji

a 3d chat room like how? give some details

well in order to do anything 3d, you would have to make the 3d environment and models and stuff.

check out Blender 3d .. its a very good and open source 3d modeling program

as for the java aspect .. i cant help you there too much there lol. ive never done anything in java using the internet. but if your ever going to need some help with making 3d models and stuff, let me know i can help out

Thanx Lopatin,

I downloaded blender.

Ok, as far as the chatroom goes, We plan to create a 3d Forum if you will, for Musicians. Okay, each band will get their own concert hall to decorate(nothing extensive). and upload thier music. Along with a stage in which they can "perform" their music. The idea is to generate a paying (virtual) crowd. And being that We are a group of producers. You can use the virtual money to buy things like beats, A&R listening sessions, plus more. This is just a general Idea.

If you're new to Java, your project is a bit ambitious. No, that's not fair. If you're new to Java, your idea is impractical in the extreme. Better to hire someone if you need this project completed sometime within the next several years. It's not realistic to believe you can accomplish this at a beginner's level.

I seen java 3d and was told I could do it with java and macromedia. Unfortunatley, the person who told me did not specify when he said java and i had no idea there were so many options. (we're in the army, he's still iraq... so, asking him is out of the question) So I came here to find the answer. What java programs could i use, or was this information misguiding? and if so, can someone help us out?

I understand this is impractical, and we may NEVER complete it. This is just us persuing a hobby. Maybe we will finish it someday. It's not like we expect to finish this next week or anything.... but it never hurts to learn something new....

Great! Start here:

The Java?Tutorial - Trail: Learning the Java Language

This will at least get you started.

> What java programs could i use, or was this information misguiding?

Note that this is a forum for Java developers; i.e., people who write programs using the Java language. If you're looking for an application to do the work for you, this isn't really the right place to ask.

Best of luck.

Ah, then this might help reflect what your question sounds like:

"I'm not looking for tips (YET). I just want to be a Special Forces Ranger Brigadier General. I've been inside a GP Medium tent and I know what an M-16 is. Someone told me that all it takes is a few pushups and a uniform. I just need to know what uniform to wear. It's not like I expect to be colonel in a few months, but it never hurts to start a new hobby."

By no means do I wish to discourage you from learning Java, if that's your goal. But it's important to be at least remotely realistic with your expectations. If you just want to learn how to use Macromedia Flash, buy the software and go through a tutorial or two. The project you describe, however, is a huge undertaking.

Cheers.

Okay, I see I'm not going to get anywhere here. First off, I'm 22 I already have a degree in music. And I plan to return to college for programming. It's not like I'm asking what software I can use and expect to learn it from thin air. I'm asking for help not criticism, although it may be constructive. I just want to make sure I dont waste my time learning something I'm never going to use. There are twelve of us working on this project. And as far as being practical, you had to have started SOMEWHERE. I'm just asking for a little insight. thanks.

You'll get a long way here if you're willing to listen. I'm trying to save you a great deal of frustration. If you enjoy frustration, by all means, don't listen and continue along your path.

> First off, I'm 22 I already have a degree in music.

I don't see how that has anything to do with your problem. Neither your age nor your degree in music changes the fact that you are asking about how to complete a project that is out of your scope.

> And I plan to return to college for programming.

What "help" are you asking for? If you want to begin learning Java, go through this tutorial for starters:

I don't disagree that you have to start SOMEWHERE. What I'm trying to get across to you is that you've expressed that you want to start at an inappropriate level. Do you have any development experience at all? The project you mentioned is not something you'll be able to just throw together in a couple months with no prior experience using Java. It's simply unreasonable, just like the Army analogy I mentioned earlier.

If you want to learn Java, start by learning the basic syntax. Familiarize yourself with object-oriented programming fundamentals. Learn something about concurrent programming. Get to know sockets. Here are some good resources for you:

Since you're a musician, think of it this way: What you're attempting to do here is the equivalent of a novice getting an instrument they know nothing about, and trying to learn by playing endless diminished arpeggios in a cycle of fifths

What, my army analogy wasn't good enough? Okay...

"Okay, I see I'm not going to get anywhere here. First off, I'm 22 and I already have a degree in underwater basketweaving. I plan to return to college for piano lessons. It's not like I'm asking whether to use a Yamaha or a Steinway and expect to learn it from thin air. I expect help, not criticism. I just want to play Liszt's Bagatelle sans tonalit for a live audience at the Met (in 3D), and you have to start somewhere."

That's kind of my point; a novice wouldn't know to ask about diminished arpeggios in the first place. If one has to ask what tool to use to build a Second Life mini-clone, one has a lot of up-front work to do...

Perhaps this analogy might be perfect, as you are a musician.

Do you know Al di Meola? Well, I do not know anything about playing the guitar, but I love his songs. What if I start learning to play Al di Meola's songs?

I Hope this analogy gives you a good insight.
