In general, you cannot.

Most backup programs do not attempt to know this information. Instead they simply write data until the tape sends a 'tape full' message, and then continue onto another piece of media.

Because many models of drives (specifically, most older drives) did not know this information themeselves, there's no standard way to ask that question. Some modern drives do know that information, but you'd need a vendor-specific tool (perhaps from Quantum or IBM) to get the information from the drive.
