Recommendations for Mail/Calender cluster?
Hi all, at the Uni where I work, we currently have a 2 node (2 x v480) Sun Cluster running iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2. We are looking at upgrading the mail system to Sun Java Messaging Server 6.3, and possibly Calender, later this year. What do people recommended we upgrade the hardware too? eg 2 x T2000 to run Mail and Calender? or maybe 2 x T2000 for mail and a T1000 for Calender? etc etc
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
NB: This mail/calender cluster may also serve as an NFS cluster too.

How many users are you looking to service?
What kind of backend disk architecture are you going to use?
Where is the directory service going?
Are you planning on using delegated admin/schema 2 for provisioning?
Is the cluster in an active/active or active/passive configuration?
Do you have a load-balancer to balance traffic between the nodes?

A few suggestions to make.
-> Try to establish a Frontend-Backend configuration and zone of applications e.g.
Frontend:
-> Calendar Frontend
-> UWC
-> Messaging MTA & MMP
Backend:
-> Calendar database
-> Messaging store

Our current configuration consists of:
2 x v210 acting as frontend mail relays/gateways (these will be retained)
2 x v480 acting as backend mail servers (sun cluster 3.1)
2 x 3510 storage arrays (mirrored) (mailboxes)
s/w is iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 on all servers
About 30,000 users
2 x v210 running JES Directory Server 5.2
4 x v210 running JES Portal Server (portal gateways)
4 x V480 running JES Portal Server (portal servers)
New messaging environment will be:
Sun Java Messaging Server 6.3
2 x v210 acting as frontend mail relays
2 x ? acting as backend mail servers
? x ? running JES calender server
EMC SAN storage for mailboxes
EMC SAN storage for calender data
We now have to decide what to run the new jes4 messaging environment on. eg v210s for mail relays, T2000s for backend mail/calender cluster

If your current system runs well on your existing hardware, Messaging 6.3 (Comms suite 5) should run equally well on the same hardware.New version does not always mean a fatter, slower application . . .
