&#174 converts to ®

i need to enter

&#174 into the database, but when i use documentbuilder it converts it to® in the xml

when i display the xsl fo (<xsl:value-of.......) using that xml the symbol shows up as

&#174; in plain text and not the symbol

is there any way to get the symbol to show?
