Java TV, STP and IPTV devices for running open applications
I like to know if IPTV or STP devices would be able to run simple applications like Mercator (Java based POS solution). We require online videos and multimedia capabilities to implement a compelling checking in and checking out processes. STBs have embedded Digital Signal Processors -DSP- that eliminate the use of memory and processing power to display videos and multimedia content. I bet that IPTV devices might imitate what it is happening with mobile phones. Many applications are running on mobile phones that were not envisioned before.

I guess it depends upon what you mean by "IPTV". At it's simplest IPTV is just a mechanism for getting a service (Video, Audio and Data) to your STB, it's what is built on top of that that counts.
I know that Sun were working on a GEM-IPTV specification; an IP network is used where traditionally we would have been talking about either a cable, terrestrial or satellite link. Built on top of that is JavaTV and all of the GEM API's. They've had to make some things that were mandatory in the specification optional, but buy and large existing Java applications that ran on other networks should be able to run with out change.
Does this help?
