Solaris 10 hang during boot

Don't know if this is a right place, if it's not, please direct me, thanks!

I had a SPARC Ultra 10 machine running under Solaris 10, it was

running for couple months. Recently when I reboot it, it was hang at

"Use is subject to license terms."

I press STOP+A to bring me to ok prompt, then type boot -v, the

following is the output:

ok boot -v

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/disk@0,0 File and args: -v

The boot filesystem is logging.

The ufs log is empty and will not be used.

Hello Peter,

capture the output of printenv to keep a record of changed settings, then reset to default values with set-defaults.

I would recommend that you temporarily disable automatic boot with setenv auto-boot? false.

Then try to boot from CD with verbose display boot cdrom -v.

This might fix the issue. At least it did for me.

If it works, re-enable automatic boot.

The strange thing is that I replaced a hard disk yesterday and at one time I was able to boot it to single user mode, but when I tried to install OS on the new disk, it stopped at the place where I described as above again.

I have no totally no clues where the problem might be.

Appreciate your helps.

Hello Peter,

sorry for the delay.

Please check the harddisk cable, is it properly attached to the systemboard ?

Detach the harddisk, does the boot from CD now continue ?

Even if the PCI slots are probed later, remove the qfe add-in board.

The next step after the hang is probing the ide device.

I'm using a different configuration (Creator 3D, second harddisk attached as slave on the primary ide channel, SunPCi II and SCSI hba installed). Comments in bold.

Hi Michael,

Replaced disk cable, tried to reboot the system, it still stucked in the same place.

Dettached the hard drive, boot from cdrom, it stopped at the same place too.

So it seems not hard drive and cable issue.

The next thing I think need to check is power supply, so I am going to check power and will post results in here.

Michael,

Just checked the power supply. According to the manual, each pin should be as follows:

1 +3.3V +3.3 VDC

2 +3.3V +3.3 VDC

3 Gnd Chassis ground

4 +5V +5 VDC

5 Gnd Chassis ground

6 +5V +5 VDC

7 Gnd Chassis ground

8 PWR_OK Power okay

9 5VSB

10 +12V +12 VDC

11 +3.3V +3.3 VDC

12 -12V -12 VDC

13 Gnd Chassis ground

14 PS_ON Power supply on

15 Gnd Chassis ground

16 Gnd Chassis ground

17 Gnd Chassis ground

18 -5V -5 VDC

19 +5V +5 VDC

20 +5V +5 VDC

But mine is quite different from above. I am not sure the manual has been changed or just my power supply broke, will find another power support for a test.

Regards,

Peter
