How bibliography entries work?

Hello, I just bought StarOffice. I am working on a university paper and want to add in-text citation and bibliography and thought that the bibliography database would make that all much simpler and more consistent.

However, I really don't understand how it works.

For example, I added to the database a book I want to cite.

Short name BEAU1981

Author Beaugrande, Robert de and Wolfgang U. Dressler

Title: Introduction to Text Linguistics

etc

Then, I go to insert this bibliography entry and I get a field that looks like --> [BEAU1981].

What is this? Is that all? How is that converted the actual bibliographic entry I want to print in my paper?

I don't want the short name! I want the full entry.

Please help me, it drives me mad! Why would I want to have a silly [BEAU1981] in my text?

Wow! Great support, you guys! Thanks a lot! You make me so happy for my purchase!(If I knew, I would not spend even that tiny amount of money for StarOffice...)
