several BIG problems installing SO8 update 6 for Windows
Here's my most recent experience trying to update StarOffice 8 for Windows (I'm running Windows XP with latest MS updates and just updated Java to 1.6.0):
1. Went to the StarOffice/Sun site and after clicking on about 4 links to find the update, was presented by a login screen and after I logged in, had to go through another 3 links. Not smooth.
2. Selected the Signed update 6 for SO 8 for Windows patch and downloaded that.
3. Double clicked on the signed patch where upon the I saw the message:
Invalid or corrupt jar file
4. Downloaded it again, same result.
5. Tried downloading the unsigned patch. Double clicked on that and it started up (looks promising).
6. At one point in the install I see:
The destination folder specified belwo does not contain a StarOffice 8 version.
The folder is: C:\Program Files\Sun\StarOffice 8\
Note, I've been running SO8 for a while now so I know that it is in fact installed there (isn't this the default install location?). So now what?
As an aside, this has not been a smooth update experience esp. since I also own a Mac and thus have experienced what updates should be like.

I keep the update site bookmarked--updates are regular and while the SO8 are readily visible, the ones for SO7 are not.
Using the bookmark means that when there is an update to download, I quickly sign in then use the bookmark to quickly return to the download site.

I always use the unsigned patch.

My updates have been smooth with StarOffice. The only thing I can think of is that your failed installs corrupted something. I would try selecting the folder and see what happens.

Sure, but my point is that with a well designed site one would not have to wade through so many links the first time.

Why not use the signed patch? It should provide more security.

I tried selecting the folder and the unsigned patch said that it could not find a program to patch.

Monday 07 May 2007One thing to try. It is possible that your profile had become corrupt. Find it in Documents and Settings, back it up, then delete it. Now try running soffice.exe. This will create a new profile. Then try the update.Phil

Can you give me more info as to where my profile is? I looked around but was unable to locate it.

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\StarOffice8
User is your Profile name. You may need to download the free version of PowerDesk to see it.
Another thing to check is your Java version. SO8 needs at least 1.5. At a command prompt type
java -version
to see what you have installed.
