DHCP-Problem with Solaris 10 11/06 on Ultra 20 M2
Hello,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 11/06 on an Ultra 20 M2 but have problems in the very beginning by configuring network settings:
(1) The ultra 20 box is connected to my dsl router, which also is a dhcp server. My Windows XP Notebook, my freebsd box and windows xp on the same ultra-box can access internet via the dsl router.
(2) After booting from the installation dvd the following messages appear:
Using RPC Bootparamsfor network configuration information
Attempting to configureinterface nge1
Skippedinterface nge1
Attempting to configureinterface nge0
Skippedinterface neg0
(3) Then I choose the following settings:
Networked: Yes
Network Interfaces: nge0
DHCP: Yes
(4) After the message
Just moment
an error message appears that no dhcp server was found:
could not contact a dhcp server on the networkinterface nge0
(6) Same result with the second interface nge1
Please help by answering the following questions:
a) Should I pay attention to the error message described under 2) ?
b) Why is the DHCP-Server not reckognized ?
Thanks in advance!

no clue, but you could try and select 'no' when prompted for network, and then configure it manually after installation by creating the empty files
/etc/hostname.nge0
/etc/dhcp.nge0
.. and see if you get a different behaviour when the system is installed, perhaps its 'just' a bug in the installation program.

I found this thread http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=832&threadID=5110175
The poster seems to have had the same problem as me with Solaris 10 06/06 and describes that the installation dvd did not provide drivers for the NIC of the Ultra 20. He had to install them afterwards from the drivers cd.
Now thats weird - isnt it?
Does anybody know if this is still true for for Version 11/06 ?

I had similar problems with my Ultra 20 M2. I had two hard drives, One Solaris 10 and the other Windows XP64. Whenever I would boot from one to the other; Solaris's hold on the ethernet/dhcp connection would hose up and would only come back when I would reboot the cable modem and router. Windows had no problem with this. I finally gave up on the Solaris HD and moved it into a server.
Now I'm trying to set up Solaris 10 on an Ultra 10 that I had to get more experience with Solaris, but I'm having problems with it recognizing the ethernet connection. Same thing posted above, it skips on install and when I try to create the connection manually (and I have experience with this since I used to have this box running Solaris 9 and manually set that up and had it running fine) no go. I'm going to try installation again and see if i missed something.
I reran the installation and chose networked and it worked this time. I got some "target" error message but a hard reboot cured that. So now I'm installing patches etc...
