Sounds like it's starting to run X, but it isn't configured properly and you can't see the display. You can boot to single user which won't run X. Then you can modify the display configuration. SPARC or x86? -- Darren

It showed my graphics as 100% compatible, and it was, until I actually installed Solaris. Then it wasn't 100% anymore. :-)

Then I had to hunt around for example X.org configuration files to look through. Finally found something that almost worked and then had to hand tweak it.

Redid kdmconfig and found the proper options for XSun and XSun said nice try, but not today. So I put my X.org config file back in place and made the change in kdmconfig and life goes on.

Use the failsafe boot. logon as root. Then:

/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d to disable the GUI from starting.

Then play with X.org config files until you get something that should work.

Then go into kdmconfig and enable X.org. Then Test. If the display works then:

/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e to re-enable GUI logons.

If the machine locks up or doesn't recover, then play some more.

If you Google Linux Laptops there is a web site that has tons of laptops and their associated X.org config files for you to peruse at your leisure.
