Java Environment 6 Update 1 not running correctly

Hi, I've recently updated my java ap from J2SE Runtime Evironment 5.0 Update 5 to the newest one (which I believe to be Environent 6 Update 1. I have certain programs that require java for it to run. When I updated it and attempted to run the program, the Icon for Java appears while the program is loading. Then the program shutdown and the icon disappears. When removed the new version and ran the program on my older verison, everything seemed fine. I've read some topics, I've restarted my computer and reinstalled the new Java numberous times.

I'm currently running on Windows XP Pro SP2 if that may be of concern. Thank you for your time and thanks in advance.
