Newcomer to Java

Hello, I have always wanted to create games and have done so by using drag and drop engines, but I am now thinking about coding my own game.

I have no knowledge of programming and I find it to be quite daunting to get into. I have a few ideas of what I want to create and the media is no problem as I can model (yep, I plan on doing a 3d game). I just want to know what java is like to use? are there any short cuts to certain features, like online play? Or would it be good to just code it all your self, so you know whats in it?

A good place to start would be to look at some tutorials: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html
