[xubuntu linux][firefox 2.0.0.3] applets don't show; empty space instead

after following the instructions at http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/manual-plugin-install-linux.html, all i got when viewing a java applet was blank space.

everything seems all right when i go to about:plugins in firefox.
