Stardisc

Some readers might like to know of the idea in the following document.

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/mhp_free_content_database_idea.PDF

There are also some notes in the DigitalTV_WG forum at the CLCTech facility at the http://www.cenelec.org webspace.

The content of the PDF mentioned above was used in the writing of the content of the following page in the wiki associated with the http://www.mhp-knowledgebase.org webspace.

http://mhpkdbwiki.s3.uni-due.de/mhpkdbwiki/index.php/MHP_free_content_database

The notes in the DigitalTV_WG forum were used as the basis of the content of the following wiki talk page.

http://mhpkdbwiki.s3.uni-due.de/mhpkdbwiki/index.php/Talk:MHP_free_content_database

I am hoping that the idea of the database of free content will become implemented. However, I do not have the knowledge, skills and facilities to do it myself. However, there are organizations which could implement the idea, perhaps obtaining funding from somewhere. Maybe the stardisc name would be used, maybe not.

Hopefully the database of free content will become implemented and be of use in providing some of the content of MHP services around the world.

Hi William,I read your articles in forums you put here. But, I still can not catch your points. So, why the free content database is useful? What will be stored in the database? And what kind skills are you looking for to implement it?Regards,Jia Yiyu

Thank you for replying.

> So, why the free content database is useful?

It could help broadcasters in some countries to be able to implement MHP channels more easily. This could be useful in using MHP for education as well as for providing information services and entertainment.

> What will be stored in the database?

MHP applications that a broadcaster can download and then include in an MHP service which that broadcaster broadcasts in its own part of the world.

> And what kind skills are you looking for to implement it?

It needs an organization which can provide a database of MHP content with security and proper provenance and certificates and so on. I know very little about the MHP security system. However, I do know that it is rigorous and that if this database is implemented that security and provenance issues must be of high importance.

Also, it needs content producers to supply content free of charge to the database. This might not necessarily be as big a problem as it may sound. For example, major content producers might provide one or two items as part of their public relations activities. University departments might provide content to the database as a very effective way of publishing work in a formal manner. Some reception equipment manufacturers might provide some content, they might not be in the business of selling content but might produce some content as part of the process of staff training in relation to equipment development.

It really needs an organization such as DVB, the Digital Video Broadcasting project, or EBU, the European Broadcasting Union, or a University to take up the idea and implement the database and the certificate system. It also needs content producers to supply content. It needs both to happen. In effect, both really need to happen simultaneously.

If at some conference or exhibition a few people happen to be having a discussion about the future of broadcasting and someone mentions the idea of this database and someone offers to supply some MHP content if someone else implements the database and someone says that as that offer of some MHP content has been made that he or she will implement the database then it could get implemented. Once that stage were reached, other people might offer MHP content as well.

It just needs someone to make an opening offer, either to implement the database or to provide some MHP content for the database.

Thanks for the further explanation. I feel you want to promote something like YouTube? It wont be a simple system. But, comparing to YouTue, Startdisc will have different users on both content supplying end and content consuming end. YouTube can be looked as a C2C system. But, Stardisc can be treatd as a B2B system, I think. So, who will sponsor this project if there is no potential benefit from it?

I saw you are looking for consultant for security. Have you started technical design for your Stardisc? You can email me at jiaAtzts@gmail.com if you think i may happen to be able to be useful for you.

Well, it is unlikely that anyone would sponsor this project if there is no potential benefit from it.

However, it might be that some organization will feel that there is potential benefit to implementing the Stardisc. Maybe it might be thought that the Stardisc would be a significant forward step in the infrastructure related to interactive television.

I thought of the idea in 1979 and I thought of the name Stardisc some time later, either in 1981 or before 1981.

> Have you started technical design for your Stardisc?

I have not started any technical design for the database. I am not in any position to implement the database myself and I am not trying to do so. I regard my role as putting the idea forward and hoping that an organization that could implement it will do so. Hopefully some organizations are considering the idea and deciding whether they wish to take up the idea.

It may be that no organization will take up the idea. However, some people are reading this thread and maybe some of them are thinking about the idea and of what it would take to implement it. Maybe one or more of them will publish a paper on what would be needed to implement the database. Such a paper could perhaps be influential as to whether, and if so, how, the Stardisc will be implemented.

I feel that the possibility of an organization taking up the idea would be increased if some MHP content producers let it be known, perhaps publicly, perhaps to an organization which might be considering whether to take up the database idea, that they would be willing to provide some free MHP content to the database. However, I accept that maybe no MHP content producer would wish to do that. I am unable to produce any MHP content myself.

This is an interesting time for the idea of the Stardisc database. Maybe it will become implemented or maybe the idea will remain unimplemented at this time.

As far as I am aware there has been no progress towards implementing the Stardisc.

Does anyone have any views on whether implementing the Stardisc would be a good thing to happen please? Or indeed any views as to whether it would not be a good idea to implement the Stardisc.
