Development kit (hardware)

Hello everyone,

I am j2me and j2ee developer and I would like to familiarize myself with the java card technologies. I am looking for development kits (sample cards and card readers) to buy from something. Could someone advice me from where should I buy such kit ?

Kind regards,

You could start with Gemalto's GemXplore Developer http://www.gemplus.com/products/gemxplore_developer. It costs approx €2500 and comes with some cards and software. It can be bought from www.smartjac.com - though their might be a closer supplier depending on where you are.

If you can hang on a bit longer it might be worth waiting for the new Eclipse based version which is due out in May.

UniverSIM Developer Suite from Giesecke & Devrient costs approx €4500 though I haven't used it myself.

There are other tools from the main card vendors but I'm not aware of any useful free tools.

Good luck - it can be very frustrating developing STK applets.

Sorry, I misread your post. If you just want to do Java Card development and not SIM toolkit development then the JCOP plugin for eclipse is a pretty good place to start www.zurich.ibm.com/jcop.

If you want to order some JCOP cards put JCOP into google and several vendors come up such as http://www.motechno.com/ibm-java-card-jcop.0.html.

Congratulations and Welcome! The Eclipse environment is a good place to do development for smart cards.

quote: - Access to the Card Readers are disabled in the Evaluation Kit So I guess that means you don't get a loader with the eval kit ?

I fail to see the what to use of the eval kit for. I cannot create cap files, connect a reader or load anything onto a card.

It does have a card simulator for 2/3G and R5...

It also lacks RMI and OCF(yech) clients...any idea what File System Editor and

Key File Editor are ?

I wonder what card profiles it supports..ie, which algos, sizes, bio, EEPROM sizes ...etc

Assuming multiplatform since it is a plug-in for Eclipse. If so, then it uses PC/SC Lite ?

I guess they are offering the kit for sale because they offer support where other free kits don't. If what you say is true re:price, then I expect someone to be sitting next to me for the entire engineering effort that price ! Phones should be answered on the first ring ! :)
