Workstations - General Discussion - Problems adding SATA drive on w1100z with WinXP
Hi,
I'm trying to connect a SATA drive to my SUN w1100z but WinXP Pro SP2 32bit will not recognize it.
I allready have two 80Gb IDE Disks installed and wanted to add another SATA disk.
I bought a Samsung HD321KJ 320Gb SATA II disk and a SATA data cable. Connected it to the board and powersupply.
During power up went into the BIOS and enabled SATA and SATA Bios.
The SATA Bios recognizes the disk and reports SAMSUNG HD321 KJ 298Gb. The Silicon Image 3512A Bios version is 4.3.52.
Now Windows starts. I login and expect a Found New Hardware dialogue, but nothing happens. Windows does not notice the new drive.
So I do Add Hardware from the Control Panel and select "add a new hardware device". I browse to a downloaded SiI 3512A Base driver and install it as a SCSI and RAID Controller. Windows now has it installed but it reports: "this device cannot be started (Code10)"
I tried several drivers (1.0.0.51 from SUN Supplemental CD 2.5, 1.3.67.0 BASE) but everytime the same result. The device is installed but has a '!' in front of it and cannot be started.
Also installed the latest bios updates from the SUN ISO 2.5 cd . Didn't help either.
I set the jumper on the SATA drive to forced-set 1.5Gb/s, reconnected the cables. All to no avail.
The SiI Utility in Control Panel only reports the 1.5Gb/s transfer rate. All other info is blank.
Tried the disk in another PC (Dell PW390) and there windows recognizes the new hardware. So the disk isn't broke.
I've got one final option left and that is to update the SiI 3512 bios.
Which bios would you recommend: 4.3.76, 4.3.79 or 4.3.83?
Which files should I patch? Only the BASE Bios, or also the SATARAID and SYSTEM Bios?
Or just only the SYSTEM Bios, because the SiI chip is on the motherboard?
The update utility forces me to choose the flash memory type. Which one should I choose:
AMD29LV010B, AMD29F010B, AMD29F040B, AMD29LV406B?
Or are there any other things I can try?
