SunMC 3.6.1 , free or not?

Hi there,

To my surprise I just found out that the SunMC webpage on sun.com was updated, but I was even more surprised to see that they changed the licensing..

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the SunMC 3.6.1 software used to be "free" for commercial use and if you wanted support than you had to buy a support contract? Now it seems only the base-package is free and you have to pay for all the other modules (which are NOT cheap).

And did Sun change the license for the Solaris Enterprise System as well? I'm pretty sure the complete Java Enterprise System was included with Solaris 10, but now I understand you only get a -limited- directory server with it?

If somebody could help me out here, I'm a bit lost...

Can you link to the licensing changes? SunMC is part of the N1 stack, and the N1 page still says: "Sun N1 Software for Free: You can download it now and use this software at no cost.":

http://www.sun.com/software/n1/index.jsp

Long ago SunMC used to have a free "base" package and you'd pay for the extra enhanced modules. But since they adopted SES licensing everything has been free to use. If you want support you still have to buy the licenses though (i.e. you can't use the free stuff and only pay for support: to get the support package you must buy the SunMC licenses that go with it).

But if they changed things I may be wrong now.

I know! I'm finding several different things on the website. For example, the official SunMC website states:

"Sun Management Center is a core component of the N1 management portfolio. Download it now and use this software at no cost. "

But if you look at the "what you get with Solaris 10" page, it states that only the base-package is included:

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ds/what_you_get.jsp

For some reason I'm not able to find anything anymore on the SunMC webpage, I think it was a misprint from this morning or maybe a quick look into the future on what Sun is planning with N1, I'm not sure. This is what it says on the webpage:

Solaris 10 includes the Sun Management Center base software package, which provides an element management system for monitoring and managing your Sun environment.

This free base package delivers hardware monitoring, with open interfaces enabling information to be shared with leading enterprise management systems for unified infrastructure management.

Sun also offers three advanced add-on applications桽ystem Reliability Manager, Performance Reporting Manager, and Service Availability Manager梩hat extend the monitoring capabilities of the base Sun Management Center software package. To learn more about the Sun Management Center software and add-on applications, please visit sun.com/solaris/sunmanagementcenter.

(On this page you will also find the changed license on the Java Enterprise System.)

Strange, isn't it? I'll post a link if I find something....

Emerald

Ah, and here's proof.....

This is a link from Google Cache, states that on March 5 2007 the license is only free for the base-package and you have to pay for all other value-added software:

And just in case the page is gone from the cache by the time you read this, here's what it said earlier:

Hi there,

Just wondering, I'm still a bit confused. The main page says it's free and part of the N1 software (also free), but on the Tech Specs page it says only the base package is free.

http://www.sun.com/software/products/sunmanagementcenter/specs.xml

Any ideas? Maybe someone from Sun?
