patches 119281-11 and 119253-18 fail to install

Update Manager tries to install patches 119281-11 and 119253-18 but fails with this message:

Utility used to install the update failed with exit code 990. The patch <patch id>

makes the kernel unstable, is obsolete or is forbidden by policy.

If these patches are unstable, obsolete, or forbidden, why does Update Manager try to install them? What can I do to fix this?

Thanks.

That message is update managers cryptic way of saying that these patches are not suitable for every installation or need manual intervention to have the desired effect. So read the readme's to be sure you want to install them. Then smpatch add -i 119281-11 -i

Thanks for the reply. The readmes don't offer any clues as to why these particular patches are special. As I'm not having the issues they supposedly fix, I'll let them be. Hopefully Sun will either issue updates or figure out why these patches are wrongly appearing in Update Manager.

Robert,

I'm using Update Manager, and looking at "Available Updates".

Where are the "readme" files? Are you referring to the "Synopsis" ?

I thought the point of an Update Manager was to review my installation and select the fixes that were appropriate.

After installation, Solaris 10 crashes during "Configure Devices", and I have no idea what to do next.

The referenced Update ID failed on my machine ... along with a stream of failures when I selected Restart.

Apparently "smpatch" is being issued under the covers.

Suggestions on the appropriate way to update the 11/06 version?
