Still trying, still hoping...
I have a somewhat frustrating problem, and I would appreciate your input.
I have a 450MHx PIII system with an LG Super multi-drive, 512MB of ram, and 3 hard drives:
The first is infested with Windows XP. The 1st (primary) partition is Win_Sys, the 2nd is a linux swap, and the 3rd is an extended partition containing 2 (logical) Windows drives; Win_Files and Win_Extras. After that there is a 16GB space at the end which COULD be used for a Solaris 10 install.
The second has three partitions: 1st is /home, the 2nd is / (for Suse 10.2), and the 3rd is for Solaris (16.9GB)
The 3rd drive is /mp3s ('nuff said)
I have been downloading Solaris disks for about a year now, and have so far collected four different versions: SOL_10_305_X86, SOL_10_106_X86, SOL_10_606_X86, and SOL_10_1106_X86.
Of these, only the first will actually boot; the 2nd and 3rd sort-of boot, in that they stay in text mode, regardless of whether or not you choose the default interactive install ( the background stays black, unlike the first, where the background turns to white and the install proceeds to the end). The last one boots up to an error state where you are left at the GRUB prompt.
The 2nd and 3rd end at a screen that reads...
Error: The disk you inserted is not a Solaris OS CD/DVD
For the most part, things are whizzing by too fast to copy down, but I have seen things like:
Cannot open cdrom/Solaris_*/Tools/Boot/and I think it ended with an X.cpio or something.
Broken pipe shows up in the 2nd and 3rd installs
Needless to say, I am a little frustrated and a lot confused. I have used the same procedure to make all of these disks, the checksums match, and I'm running out of ideas.
Could the ram size be an issue? I think I saw a reference to the GUI install requiring 512MB of ram after the 0305 release.
Any help would really be appreciated, as I would like to wean myself of of Linux.
Thanks in advance
