Clustering - Cluster Heartbeat IP

Hi,

Presently I have a cluster set up, which a request is made to change the heartbeat ip address.

Understanding from the cluster installation document, this ip is configured, by default, only the first 2 octets. Eg,. 192.172.0.0 The last 2 octets cannot be configured. They will be configured by the cluster software. Is this correct? Am I able to define the last 2 octets?

Another query that I have is that do I need to reinstall the cluster software if I were to change this IP?

Thanks!!

Yes, the Sun Cluster framework manages the allocation of the last two octets in the private heartbeat network address space. If you are running Sun Cluster 3.1, the supported way to change these subnet that was originally allocated is to re-install the cluster. Having said that, you could modify the ccr by hand and re-generate the checksums if you are on a test/dev cluster and knew what you were doing.

Under SC3.2, this is a lot easier as there are commands to change these properties, specifically: cluster set-netprops

In SC3.2, there is also a flexible IP scheme for the interconnect addresses which means you no longer need a full class B subnet.
