Servers - General Discussion - Lomlite Trouble on Netra T1 AC200

Hi,

I just recently got ahold of a used Netra T1 and its not working correctly from what i can tell. I had this box awhile ago and apparently setup a Lomlite user on it, but I must not have given myself the right permissions

When i get into the lomlite console i get the following commands:

lom>help

The following commands are supported:

environment

help

show

version

set

loghistory

showlogs

date

showdate

logout

password

How do i reset my permissions or reset Lomlite? I tried connecting to the B console port, i can't even get anything out of that. Some people have mentioned trying a JP13/14 trick, that doesn't do anything useful. I have tried closing the jumper in JP13, and when i remove it, it just boots the lomlite again and brings me to the same lomlite console login. I have tried doing that with JP14 closed as well, doesn't change anything.

Is it possible to resurrect this machine?

Hello? Anyone out there? Why does my list of lom commands not have anything on it!? I can't seem to reset ANYTHING. Is there a way to just pop the battery out and recover that way? I tried removing the batter but that doesn't seem to have any effect at all.

The Netra T1 AC200 User's Guide might be of value.

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/server.nebs#hic

See Chapter 8 for configuring LOMlite.

See Chapter 10 for Troubleshooting.

That manual can be found from the "Related Documentation" link of the SSH page for that system.

Hi Rukbat

That gave me a good starting point, though it appears that i'm on my own. The guides give the configuration parameters for setting up a user in LOM, but not what to do if the only user in the LOM does not have the permissions to do anything.

Any ideas? Someone on a different forum at a different site recommended taking the NVRAM battery out for awhile but that doesn't seem to be the right idea.

I've never had to work on one of those systems, nor have I done more than

just quickly go through its documentation.

I think the AC200's LOM configuration is kept on your Solaris filesystem.

Is there an OS installed? Can you telnet to it and get into the OS in that fashion?

If there isn't an OS installed then the LOM is inoperable (non-existent) until you reconfigure it.

... that's what I got from Chapter 8 of the manual.

Perhaps a forum reader with first hand experience with that model can help.

If you have a service contract, call Sun Support.

If no contract, a billable request is more expensive than the computer is worth.

Hi Rukbat,

There isn't an OS on the machine, but I know that the LOM has to be stored somewhere, because with both the harddrive removed and the SCC pulled, i can still login with the one good username we have (that doesn't have the permissions), so that configuration data is stored SOMEWHERE.

Is there anyone with first hand experience with these systems? Its for personal learning use more than anything and Rukbat is right, a billable service request is much more expensive than what the system would cost.

I've read through the guide and looked at the jumper configs. It appears I just don't know what combination of the JP13 / JP14 jumper settings. If i close JP13, the LOM on the system hangs, and opening it causes the LOM to reboot but still with the same user/pass/permission settings.

If I close JP14, and then close/open JP13, the LOM reboots and i get a weird message at the end of the LOM boot (Unexpected reset) but again no reset of the user/pass.

Dammit i'm determined to get into this server. I've spent enough time now that giving up will just piss me off and i hate giving up when i'm so close after so much time.

I figured it out and got the LOM reset on the machine, i'd post it but i'm not sure if i'm not supposed to. What do you guys think?

Keep in mind that this is a generic and public forum on the internet.

The solution to your issue can directly impact the security of the computer system.

If your solution involves typing various commands, or involves

documentation only available to Sun employees or holders of service contracts,

then do not post your work-around.That would be privileged information.

If it's more of a brute-force repair method

and someone would need to have physical access

to an inoperable system, and there is a chance the computer would be

turned into an expensive doorstop if the repair fails,

then do think about giving us some insight.

(and that advice goes for the thread you opened at the LinuxQuestions.Org forum, as well)

Thanks Rukbat...words to live by.

Unfortunately I just found out my repair/workaround didn't work. I managed to get the LOM "reset" but only temporarily because the LOM couldn't see the "eeprom" and thus just went default. I couldn't access the user permissions for my user or anything and trying most commands just hung the machine. It did seem that the console wasn't shared and thus dedidated to the B port.

I figured I could just say to heck with it, and bybass the LOM completely using the bypass jumper as documented in the SUN manual on the Netra T1 AC200, but when the server is fully powered, I do not get any output from ttyb (serial b). I'm assuming that the console cable and settings used for Serial A (lom) are the same for B but it looks like its busted so i'm probably boned anyways unless I spend some $$ for a new board or box.

I was really hoping to learn Solaris on a Sparc machine, i hear there are driver and performance issues installing on non-sun x86 machines.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know, otherwise i'm just going to hold out for a bit longer. I'm pretty dejected right now after so much time spent, but I hate throwing out hardware that may have a purpose if i come across that last bit of information.
