At the beginning.

Hi, I'm a REAL beginner in need of some help to get started. I can program sinclair basic and dark basic but this is my first try at java.

I've bought the beginners guide and am following the steps in the first module and I've downloaded the JDK. The thing I'm having trouble with is compiling and running the small program I entered in notepad. When I run the javac or java applications the window just opens and closes really quickly. What am I doing wrong? Is there somewhere I can get decent instructions that don't take hours to download on 56k dial up? Please somebody help, Cheers.
