New To Java - I am new to Java
A couple of friends and I are trying to do a casio calculator for a project using Java, and we are sort of stuff with how to go about doing it. We have the basic requirements, but we need help trying to actually doing the coding for it. is there anyone that can help us, or give us some advice. We don't want to copy anyones work, but if there is someone that could give us some help it would be much appriaciated
Thank you
If you do have any more info you can e-mail me at spaddgrandberry@gmail.com
thanks
Do you have a question? What is the problem?

we just want to know how would you start java coding. How would we go about writing the code for the calculator?
Do you have a question? What is the problem?Only one question - who wants to do this project for them.
we just want to know how would you start java coding. How would we go about writing the code for thecalculator?start with a text editor
You will need a GUI obviously and take it from there. Create each button on the calculator and so on and then come back with specific questions so that one can help you with.Your question is too general. Be specific.

We have a code, but we want to know how to view what we have done so far, like if we were to use the java code that we have done. Does that make sense?
We have a code, but we want to know how to view whatwe have done so far, like if we were to use the javacode that we have done. Does that make sense?not even a little bit
we have a code. but how would you show what you have done. for example, when we hand it in and the lectures will look at it, they will have to see if the calculator works, so how would we go about doing that so we could see it. So like, do you knwo how to run the program
I think it means "we have downloaded some source code from somewhere, but we have absolutely no idea what to do with it".
no. we have done the coding. but we dont know how to run it
This is a new low. The poster has found a solution and is absolutely clueless about what to do with it.Cue the start of "2001: A Space Odyssey"
no. we have done the coding. but we dont know how torun itrubbish. if you knew how to write code, you'd know how to run it. go cheat somewhere else
no. we have done the coding. but we dont know how torun itThe only help that can be provided at this point is: Start at the tutorials. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html

heh heh I love how they've claimed to have written a calculator, but don't know how to run it. most people would have started with something a bit simpler.....
if you read formt he top, we havent finnished it. we havent been trying to cheat. if you dont want to help, dont post comments. we jus want people that will help us with it, not people that are assuming things that aren't going to. we have taught how to do coding and we have started it, but we have not been taught how to do other parts of it. if we were trying to cheat, we would just download one and hand it in. we jus have got stuck half way and thought there might be some genuine nice people on this forum to help us out, but instead, there are some people that are just trying to bring us down. we dont want people being mean, we just thought there would be people that would help-thats all

if you realised that we've all been here a while, and can spot a freeloader a mile off, you wouldn't bother trying to convince us otherwise
if you wrote the code it's one of the following
1) you wrote a huge pile of code without testing anything = people here will say rewrite
2) you stole the code from somewhere and have no idea what it does = people will not help.
3) you have written almost nothing, but at least it's small enough to test = people will tell you to read the tutorial and come back when you get stuck.
Missing any folks ?
@Op. You need to read first cup of Java if you don't know how to run your app. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/index.html

4) you started too big. most people at least try a "hello world" app. from scratch to actually running the thing, before moving on
5) you weren't paying attention when your tutor showed you how to run java code. there's no way he'd set you an assignment without first having taught you at least that
just do what all the girls on my course did. wear a short skirt, low-cut top and plead for an extension. never failed
edit: sorry, it never failed except for that big girl with the moustache

What do you expect, magic? For someone here to remote into your PC, and remotely hold your hand while he/she figures out what you really need help with?
The link to the tutorial is all that can be done without a specific question about some code or something along that line. What reasonable person would think they'd get anywhere by just basically screaming "HELP!" on the internet without having anything (like some code snippets or documentation) to discuss?

That I would say is the same as 1, I think of compiling as a necessary step to test it.

Thanks for that one, forgot it.

No but it sure got me close to being sent to the psych department for a free evaluation session. ;-P WAIT a minute, now I know what Jos/Loretta seemed so familiar. I think i met them there once ;-)
Let's not get sexist. And for all we know, the OP adopted a feminine username for sympathy.

I believe you mean you have done some coding and want to run the code and see if it works. If this assumption is true then you need to compile your code with this
javac YOURCLASSNAME.java
if all goes well this should create a .class file of your java class, run it like this
java YOURCLASSNAME

I don't think he can have that title until he replies back and forth for 100 posts about the classpath before finally remotely taking over their machine and fixing it for them.
Then and only then can he be the official Forum Spoonfeeder.

well, have some mercy on them. They are new to java. Let them drink java and enjoy it.

yeh but we try not to help people cheat at exams, assignments and the like, or help people who basically say "I can't be bothered. you do it"

Well, all I have told them was to be able to run an application, which I don't think I have helped them with their project. Have I?

I honestly can't be bothered

With their project not directly, but if they notice that they didn't have to do any reading to get this part working why should they do any reading to get the next part working. It becomes a viscious cycle that most of us would not like to start. Had they read that and said here's my filename, here is the command I am trying to run, and I get this error, that is much more different from we don't know how to deal with our program. Also another thing is that giving answers without knowing the problem will likely only lead to more problems, more confusion and frustration.
I googled for "How to run java" and clicked a random result, I couldn't help but sharing this with you guys: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread8505.html
This thread has about everything a good forum thread should have: a short question, a quick reply of someone that doesn't know for sure, a reply with a link to a page that gives a detailed explanation... So far so good... 2 years later it's revived by someone too lazy to RTFM! The help he gets is kind of hilarious! "Make sure you save your code in the jdk\bin directory?"(quote fastmike)
