Messenger Express has been deprecated

Background: I am trying to migrate from System Messaging Server 6.1 (Solaris) to System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (Linux). While trying to get this to work, I ran across patch 118209. As part of the installation of that patch, it stated:

WARNING: Messenger Express has been deprecated

It will be removed in JES6

Well, bummer. We depend heavily on Messenger Express. Questions:

1) What is 6.2-8.04 with regards to JES versioning? (i.e. how long do we have before we really need to find a replacement for Messenger Express)

2) What is the replacement for Messenger Express in the JES Suite? Communications Express?

Thanks

Benji

6.2 all patches will be JES5.Messaging Server has been removed from the JES stack, and is now part of the "communication suite". Comm Suite has just been released internally, due for public release April 1.

The ME interface is actually still there, but it's due to be replaced by UWC , as you surmised. UWC now communicates to the store via IMAP.

For the newbie, UWC = ?

Assuming UWC = the communication suite, it sounds as if I need look at the overall communications suite installation to get the the web interface for email.

What is the likelyhood that our current licensing for Messenger covers the entire communications suite? (I know you can not comment on that specifically and we will need to talk to our sales rep -- just trying to determine its likelyhood is all)

Thank you for the information.

Benji

UWC = Communications Express - The Mail, Calendar, addressbook, etc. webapp. Why is Messenger removed from JES - does JES still exist? What is the communications suite? Can it be dowloaded like the JES could be?Will JES continue to see patches, bugfixes, etc.

Exactly

Jes still exists. Comm Suite was split apart mostly to disconnect the release schedule from JES, and allow the Comms folk to release new products when they were ready, not on the JES schedule.

Yes. It's now ready:

Some of the products may continue to recieve patches, some are what we call, "point patches", and are built for specific customers that cannot upgrade.

Some fixes will require you to upgrade, as always. We just don't have enough engineers to fix old code as well as new code. That's why we're not fixing Messaging 5.2 any more.

the webserver and directory server appear not to be included, along with access manager, app & proxy servers, etc?

i suppose the install expects these to be in place ahead of time?

does CS make any of the now excluded components unnecessary?

is there a doc that compares what's in the JES vs what's in the CS?

Hm.Access Manager, Directory 6, proxy servers are all supposed to be included. Honestly, I've not downloaded and installed myself, yet. Everything you need to set up working Calendar/Messaging/UWC are supposed to be there. That means web server, AM, Directory, proxies, etc.

Thanks Jay. Will see how this mess goes. Maybe life would be easier if we were not so far behind (but are we "so far behind"? Messenger 6.1 using DS6 and DA 1.2).oh well.Benji

Hi

Access manager, web-server/app-server, directory server are all included. All the components needed to run messaging/calendar/instant messaging environment are included.

I would recommend downloading the comm-suite software, finding a nice spare Solaris 10 box in your environment and installing the entire suite to get an idea of what has changed. The following are steps to do just that (without having to scrape through a number of manuals):

http://docs.sun.com/source/820-0086/index.html

> i suppose the install expects these to be in place

> ahead of time?

No.

> does CS make any of the now excluded components

> unnecessary?

Pretty much all the same dependencies exist. Think of comm-suite as the old JES suite but without portal server :)

> is there a doc that compares what's in the JES vs

> what's in the CS?

Not that I know of. There is essentially very little difference. This is more of a political change at this stage then a technical change. As Jay pointed out, it allows the comms group to in future release outside of the JES release cycle, and more tightly integrate the products.

Regards,

Shane.
