Instruments for Build & Release Engineering
I'd be interested to hear and share experience with tools used to automate Build & Release Engineering tasks. Furthermore, very interesting to hear about tools for automation of Configuration & Change Management tasks. For example, my team used INF (Integration Notice Facility) - tools serve to communicate and record the detailed engineering plans to modify a product's source. Looks to me, INF a bridge between Bug Tracking tools and Source Code Management tools as CVS and TeamWare.

At my place we've had several in-house developed "tools" (which really don't meet our needs). There are a number of good, competing products that have appeared in the last few years that are bringing more visibility to the need to (fully) automate build/release tasks - OpenMake (esp. their new "Mojo), IBM BuildForge, Electric Cloud, to name a few. BuildForge in particular is coming out with several integrations with ClearCase and ClearQuest (as of v7.0) and Tivoli software distribution which might be interesting. Only problem is convicing mgmt to come up with the $$$ to purchase one of these tools.

Regarding purchasing new tools, sometimes it's more easy to justify for mgmgt to start project for developing new tolls which will meet production needs of Build/Release Engineering than deploy tools developed to addressed someone else needs. Of course, maintaining these new tools sometime became a issue, but it could be addressed by opensoursing these new project, for example.
