networking a Quad GigaSwift Ethernet

I am trying to network a V440 running Solaris 9 with a Sun Quad GigaSwift PCI-X Adapter. I have configured the ports to be "ce1" and "ce2". I have shutdown ce0 and removed the "hostname.ce0" file. Here is the problem, I want ce1 and ce2 to have the same IP address. I have created a hostname.ce1, and hostname.ce2 file with seperate hostnames. I have placed those hostname with Ip's in the /etc/hosts file. I have set the subnetmasks, and defaultrouter files. when I do a ifconfig -a, ce1 and ce2 show , but ce1 is the only one up. I also get the "SIOCSLIFFLAGS: cannot assign requested address ce2" error on bootup and if I try to manualy try to startup ce2. Any help would be appreciated.
