Blade 100's/150's
I recently purchased a lot of 30 blade 100's and 150's in an auction. I really want to set up a cluster with these machines, but I am having trouble getting them to boot. The condition of these systems is unknown at this point because they came without RAM. Let me get to what is happening.
When I put a 512MB PC133 ECC stick in the first slot, and hit the power button, the LED lights on for a second then the LED turns off. What's interesting is that the CPU fan as well as the power supply is on. Also, a motherboard LED indicator is on near the rear of the system. I am guessing that the RAM is wrong; do I need PC100? Is there a jumper setting?
Also, are there any 1000Mbps NIC's that are compatible with these machines?

I have actually already done that. The service manual and sun part numbers conflict. For example:
The Sun Blade 100 uses PC100 compliant SDRAM DIMMs.
That is taken from the service manual. If I look up options for the 100s and 150s it says PC133 ECC.
It would be nice to put official sun branded memory in these boxes, however sun just slaps their name on a part from a big memory manufacturer. I can't afford to pay for the Sun sticker; I got these systems for a little more than 20$ USD a piece, and could barely afford that. I am basically praying at this point that I did not purchase a lot of lemons.

What I am looking for, is an explanation as to what the power button LED turning off yet the system still having power indicates. This has got to mean something. If I try to boot with no RAM at all, it beeps I think three times then shuts off power.

You need *registered* ECC RAM (of the appropriate speed).
Yes, there are 1Gbps NICs that work. I have one in the Blade 150 that I'm typing on right now :-) It's a standard Sun part number... Try some of the used Sun hardware places, such as "anysystem.com". There's several around that you might talk to, but that's the only one that comes to mind. Have not actually used them yet, but have found many interesting things on their website that I would buy if I had a little extra money!
