upgrade storage capacity of the Sun Ultrasparc 2

Dear reader,

I am planning to replace my current 4.3 gb harddisk (ST34371WC) in my Sun

Ultrasparc 2 enterprise with a disk with a larger storage capacity, for example the 73 gb ST373307LC.

I searched several FAQ's on the internet and found out that a LVD (low voltage differential) SCSI disk is backwards compatible with single ended SCSI.

I assume my current harddisk (ST34371WC) is a single ended SCSI drive, at

least that is what I think it is. The Sun Handbook unfortunately provides minor information about this topic.

Can someone confirm or deny that a LVD drive like for example the ST373307LC will work on the (probably) single ended scsi interface in my Ultrasparc 2?

For your information: My major concern is increasing the storage capacity

of the Ultrsparc. Speed isn't an issue. If you have other alternatives on your mind for

the above mentioned "storage upgrade plan from 4 gb to approximate 70 gb"

please let me know.

with kind regards,

Asim

first, do you have the service manual?

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/802-2561-11.pdf

second, why do you need so much storage? you might be better off with external storage... like a 711 (6 half height drives - less expensive or 12 1" drives- more expensive)...

I imagine drives past 36gig may generate more heat than the U2 can handle.

Dear Haroldb,

Thank you for linking the services manual. It includes indeed technical information of the SCSI controller. It is a single ended, fast/wide scsi, 16 bits with a parity bit.

I need the storage because i am planning to migrate my current server to the ultrasparc. On my current server I have approximately 40 gigabyte in use.

Regarding external storage, it will be a always on system (24u/7d) so I prefer 1 large disk instead of 6 drives due to power consumption.

with kind regards,

Asim
