Various issues on Sol10 (Internet access, changing desktop enviro, etc...)
Hi all !
I've searched the forum topics for quite some time before deciding to post my own topic, because I just installed Solaris 10 on a virtual machine via Parallels Desktop for Mac (on a MacBook Pro), and I still have some unsolveds :
1) I can't connect to the Internet ; my ISP is AOL (no guffaws, please, this is a serious issue...), my modem is an AOLbox (wireless), and I have another PC (Toshiba laptop) connected to the same network as my Mac. What kind of information do I need to make my default network settings recognized by Solaris (at this point, I'll add that ALL the virtual machines I've installed through Parallels connected to the Internet right away, but not Solaris) ?
2) Less serious, but still : during install, I chose the Java Desktop Environment, but now I'd like to switch to Common Desktop Environment ; how do I do that ?
3) How do I set my screen resolution to the 1440x900 pixels my MacBook Pro favors ? With default settings, I'm stuck either to a full screen where all the icons on the left of the Desktop are hidden (1600x1200), or no full screen at all, since the other settings only cause the shell to restart, but don't apply after that... In the latter case, the Dock gets in the way almost every time I wan to click on a Desktop icon if it's located to low. :-(
Sorry to bundle my queries like this, but one thread is much easier to follow than 3 or 4...
THX in advance !

The screen resolution bit is going to be more difficult than the others. A start will be kdmconfig.
I know nothing of parallels but for some reason internet is never as easy as it should be. Check your settings in the etc folder to make sure they are correct. Here are most of the files you need to look at
/etc/hosts
/etc/defaultrouter
/etc/resolv.conf
Anything different in those compared to working installations should be a good start. ifconfig may also be informative.

I'm having I-net issues as well. Here's some help on my previous steps. Use prtconf -pv to see if your card is ok at a PCI bus level. You should see it if so. After that, it's a matter of getting a working driver. Download the driver and install it. I reomend rebooting since I got erors in the TEST section of my driver. Damn card worked when I rebooted. (Ignore kernel warnings if you are using a chipset based card that isn't OEM). ifconfig -a should show you if your driver found the card. It also gives your the driver name so you can play around with settings.
Ok here's my problem /usr/sbin/nslookup www.sun.com gives me back a real IP, i.e., it resolved the name. Mozilla and ping can't translate the name into an IP. Any suggestions?

Hi all !
OK, my problem(s) are partially over, since I decided to... uninstall Solaris from Parallels, and to install it in dual-boot on my Toshiba laptop. So I suppose I'll find myself facing the same issues when that time comes : no immediate Internet connection, a GUI that needs some tinkering before it displays the way I want it too, etc...
You'll be hearing from me real soon, I gather... In the meantime, have a nice day/week, and again thanks for your help.
