Question on DB25->RJ45 serial conversions (Blade 1000<->V480)

Hello everyone!

BTW, this is my first post on the Servers forum :-)

I recently bought a Sun Fire V480 server, which didn't come with the RJ45->DB25 serial adapter + cable. The V480 manuals say that the RJ45 uses all 8 wires for the communication, so I ordered an adapter from Blackbox (part # FA732).

My question is the following: Should I use a straight or a cross-over ethernet cable with the adapter?

Bonus points for the following: Blackbox also sells an RJ45->DB9 serial adapter, part # FA1002. Can I use that adapter as well in order to convert the serial traffic as well?

Best regards,

PS. In case you are looking for the adapter from Blackbox' site, the link is: http://www.blackbox.com/Catalog/Detail.aspx?cid=45,659,715&mid=1322

PPS. I have a Sun Blade 1000 as my other machine, that's why the adapter that I bought is DB25 male.

Welcome to the forum!

Under normal circumstances a 'straight' Ethernet cable should do it - no crossover cable is needed.

Other question: why don't you use the serial mgt interface, it might work out-of-the box if connected to your blackbox?

eg. we use a Lantronix Console server. To make a connection to a V210/V240 a special adapter was necessary from Lantronix, this is documented at their site. Maybe blackbox has a similar information.

You see the serial pin-out of a V240 from the Sun system handbook. With that in hand, you can enquire blackbox.
