SunFire V1280 Screen and Keyboard?

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a Screen and keyboard to a Sunfire V1280?

I have tried an XVR100 graphics card which it seems to recognise, and put in a PCI USB card with keyboard attached. The latter doesn't get detected.

I know these things are normally run from a terminal session of some kind but the current E4500's that these are due to replace run with screen and keyboard.

If they can be connected it will save me a load of software changes - don't ask!

Cheers

Hello Scoop,

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a Screen and keyboard to a Sunfire V1280?

...

That's right servers are controlled via serial or network.

I .. put in a PCI USB card with keyboard attached. The latter doesn't get detected.

Systems with standard Mini-DIN keyboard port (e.g. your E4500) don't contain the support for a USB keyboard in the OBP. The support is available after loading the operating system (and the USB drivers).

Systems with USB (keyboard) port contain this support in the OBP.

The V1280 even doesn't have a keyboard port (neither MiniDIN nor USB). The keyboard attached to the USB add-in board won't work until the OS is loaded.

If they can be connected it will save me a load of software changes - don't ask!

I assume that you use an application (e.g. batch processing with FrameMaker) that requires to open a graphical session on the console. We used VNC to create a virtual framebuffer on the server. Don't ask me for details ...

So, you require a *graphical* console then?No way to do basic setup over the serial console, then SSH in and do the graphical stuff through X-Windows?

Cheers, so looks like I am going to have to make changes then, We uise VNC a bit here already so I'll have a look into the virtual framebuffer idea. Thanks!
