java not found.

just got new computer 3 weeks ago and it has vista home basic edition on it. i went to play a game online and was told i needed java. i downloaded jre1.6.0 and was able to play the game but all the video clips and music i was able to play at first wont work now. telling me that java is not found. i was told to go into control panel and in java make sure it was marked for applet tag support. there is no such box to mark. does anyone know how i get that?
