out of space on /var - upgrade OS to free up ?

I have a couple of small boxes with low disk space almost out of space on /var due to patches - Mostly running Sol10 1/06 - If I were to 'upgrade' these to the latest revision of Sol10, would obsolete patches be removed that way?

I remember with older OSes the availability of the maintenance updates which would do just that.

In these cases, I can't 'resize' the /var or allocate other space to it unfortunately.

There were some approaches on removing obsolete patches by removing the 'obsolete.Z' but...
