Error: Unable to download document : "xml/motd.xml"

Hi,

I got the following error messages when downloading patches on my sunUC clients:

# smpatch download -i 118833-36

Error: Unable to download document : "xml/motd.xml"

Cannot connect to retrieve xml/motd.xml: Bad Request

Unable to display any message of the day notices from Sun Microsystems. Refer to the log file for additional information.

118833-36 has been validated.

I looked at all the log files in /var/sadm/spool and couldn't find anything related to the error messages.

The patch 118833-36 was downloaded and installed fine.

The error which you are seeing "503" means that servcies are not availavble because they are out of resources.

This would point to an issue with the patchsvr.

Do you have any other systems configured to use this patchsvr, that can sucessfully analyze / download / update patches?

Please can you run the following commands on the patchsvr:

# ls -laR /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr

# patchsvr stop

# patchsvr start

# patchsvr enable

# patchsvr status

The run the following command on "b1stsun02":

# smpatch analyze -C patchpro.log.level=3 -C patchpro.debug=true

My observations:

- problem with downloading "xml/motd.xml" file still there in all 4 test scenarios.

- path /solaris/ needs to be added to source URL to get the patches.

Hello Mod,

What is the conclusion regarding to the URL of patch source?

Is it http://somehostname:3816/ as documented on patch 119788-07 or http://somehostname:3816/solaris/?

It seems that on my sunUC clients (they are all solaris 10 wit patch 121118-11 installed) I need to add /solaris/ to the URL of the proxy server (also solaris 10) in order to get the patches.

The correct convention to use is the one without the trailing "solaris/"

The 0 byte files shown in your /var/sadm/... are indicative of an ongoing issue.

Would please try removing any 0 byte files here, both on the Proxy and on a test Client , then restarting the patchsvr , then retrying the download frm a client and let us know how you get on please.

Same results as before.

I deleted all zero byte files from /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr on sunUC proxy and didn't find any zero byte file on client.

Restarted sunUC proxy.

Run smpatch analyze twice on client.

- 1st run without trailing solaris/ on source URL and no patch was reported.

- 2nd run with trailing solaris/ on source URL and some patches were reported.

The xml error messages appeared on both runs.

Could you rm everything under /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr then restart the patchsvr and try 'smpatch analyze' on the client again? There have been some changes to the directory structure on the patchsvr, so I'd like to eliminate any possible conflicts there.

Didn't work.

Cleared directory /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr

Run smpatch analyze on client with and without trailing solaris/ in source URL.

Results are as before. See below.

Did you ever manage to get the kernel patch 118833-36 installed?

If not , can you please attempt a manual installtion of this patch - in single-user mode and not using smpatch/update connection

Let us know following this is there is any change in behaviour.

patch 118833-36 was applied to all my Solaris 10 boxes when it was released several weeks ago.

At that time, I installed the patch manually as follows:

# smpatch add -i 118833-36

# touch /reconfigure

# init 6

although not in single-user mode. However, uname -a shows that kernel was patched accordingly.

Despite the ability to install this kernel patch in multi-user mode , it should be installed in single-user mode.

I suggest you attempt to install it this way and see if the behaviour changes.

Regarding removing the presently installed one first, I do not know if patchrm in su mode or mu mode would be best.
