Sun Ultra 20 won't boot when warm

I have a Sun Ultra 20 station which has 4 GB of memory installed. (4 X 1 GB DIMM's). Since I installed the 4 GB of memory the station will only startup if I turn off the power button followed by turning it back on while holding in the front power button. It will work fine if I only put in two DIMMs, it doesn't matter which of the four I put in and passes every diagnostic I have thrown at it when it is running. Of course, spending the money for DIMM's I can't plug in is not an alternative I am interested in.

The above startup method was described to me by one of the Sun support techs when I first called about the issue. He also told me that it was documented on internal documents circulating around Sun and they were going to fix the issue by releasing a BIOS update which has never materialized. Last time I called their support line the tech claimed to know nothing about the issue.

The real kick in the butt comes after the station has run for a while. After it has had a chance to heat up it will not turn back on until it cools off again.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

Hi,

probably I'm telling you not much new here ...

Including the DIMM checker on the supplemental CD?

The BIOS can tell you how fast the dans spin while in setup mode...

The only thing I could think off are bad dimms...

Sorry not to be able to help you more.

Thanks for the suggestion. DIMMs run fine including with the DIMM checker. The problem is actually a known SUN bug that they haven't made public. The voltage sags if you have four DIMMs in the station and the machine stops working. I'm escalating it through a support ticket but I'm wondering if just replacing the power supply with a more powerful one would help. Well, let's see what Sun comes back with!

Hello,

there has been an issue with an early revision of the power supply.

The system won't power up at all if 4Gb of memory are installed.

Just login to SunSolve and review the Sun System Handbook (SSH) page of the power supply. Components have been moved to the contract-only SSH ...

Thanks for the pointer, I never thoguht to look at the power supply page, I've been checking the workstation. Well, Sun shipped me a new power supply yesterday so I should be in computing Nirvana by this weekend! (knocks on wood)
