Sun notebook
Hi.
Recently I decided to buy a notebook, and due to there is no point to play games on that "low-life-battery" thing, thus I was wondering if there are any sort of Sun notebooks?
Or at least any notebook which can support Solaris with all the hardware working perfectly strait out of the box?
Thank you for your posts.
PS: some time ago I've seen notebooks in Sun.com store, but I think they took it away :( I dont remember the name.

Yeah something like it!
Just understood that my last post was missing one thing :(
Would you be so nice to provide information about such notebooks which I can buy in Sweden or companies which ship oversees?
Because that link was great, but didn't figure it out how to buy one of those nether the price.
Thanks

unfortunately, if you have to ask, you can't afford them...

I think they start at $2500 US ... couldn't find a price for them in Google....
if you are corporate, or independently wealthy, I am not sure they are affordable.
but I am a pessimist...
good luck,

Yeah :(price is more then a student can afford, not a fan of saving money for half a year. Especially when its hard to buy them. Then maybe there are normal notebooks which can support Solaris without hardware compobility problems?

Expect to spend around $6,000 US to get one with enough speed and RAM to satisfy most people.EXCELLENT equipment though! I really enjoyed using one when I had it. Unfortunately the price puts it out of reach for me right now.

Hello Bi0Z,
the SPARC based notebooks are targeted for consultants/business users and developers who want to demonstrate their software at the customer site. They are definetely not for the consumer market.
Maybe m-lennon can give you a pointer. He is Sun Partner and based in Sweden.
For x86/x64 notebooks please review the HCL and browse the archived mails of the Solarisx86 yahoo group or Open Solaris maillist.
Solaris 10 x86 is under delopment, some features are only supported in Solaris Nevada (aka 11 / Next), other are still completely missing.

Thanks, good answer btw. Then I assume I should not continue the search for sparc notebook anymore. :(But one more question:Does anyone know when next Solaris OS will be released and will it have a better support for pc hardware?

Hello,
Does anyone know when next Solaris OS will be released ... ?
For x86/x64 notebooks please review the HCL and browse the archived (=online contents, verus the individual emails sent to every subscriber) of the Solarisx86 yahoo group or Open Solaris maillist.
... and will it have a better support for pc hardware?
Sure !! Every release adds support for new hardware.
Basically Solaris 10 x86 supports every current system, but not every feature is supported.
Review the above mentioned sources.

Yeah I did surf that list hundreds of times, managed to bypass some problems, but not all.
Last question I posted turned out to be ill formulated, what I meant was:
Will next Solaris include unofficial drivers which right now provided by Sun Microsystems for download? Or we have to set them ourself again?

Hello,
Will next Solaris include unofficial drivers which right now provided by Sun Microsystems for download? Or we have to set them ourself again?
How should I know ?
These forums are user-to-user and ... discuss servers, workstations, and other hardware products from Sun Microsystems, Inc.
If you want (private or semi-offical) statements from Sun employees join the OpenSolaris.org and the Solarisx86 yahoo group, read comp.unix.solaris.
You asked about the Sun notebooks and have been told that they aren't cheap.
Then you asked ... any notebook which can support Solaris with all the hardware working perfectly strait out of the box?
The answer is easy and straight forward: N O N E.
When reading the Solarisx86 group the Acer Ferrari was the premier choice. Why ? Some of the developers got these (high end) notebooks and created packages (e.g. frkit or wireless support) for them.
Select your hardware from the HCL and carefully watch the above groups/newlists for hints.
Last question ...
Last answer.
Michael
