A really newbie wants help...

Hi All!

I`m coming from the Linux world, so I`m a little confused about being a real Unix user. I would like to start learning from the starts. I installed Solaris 10 6/06 on my AMD64 box, I have been searhing for good documentations around the OS, but at docs.sun --at least for me it seems-- there are docs only for people already know the basics. I indeed know something about Unix-like stuff for I have been using Linux for a few years, so I`m not absolutely unfamiliar with the topic, but I want some clear, detailed doc/tutorial about Solaris. For example so far I have not been able to find out the exact meaning of the device nodes of HDD`s, I mean I don`t really know what /dev/sdk/c0t0d0s1

exactly means. I have been using FreeBSD for a short while, so I can figure out that s1 at the end means slice 1, but I`m absolutely not sure about this either.

So I really need some docs, or at least some people around here who help me.

Any help would be apretiated.

Thanks in advance!

G.

Look in section "Logical Device Names" of Solaris Handbook for Sun Peripherals at: http://docs.sun.com/source/816-4468-10/scsi.html

I remember the following from the training:

if you follow from the main board, c stands for controller (there can be multiple controllers on board), t stands for target (you can have many multipack boxes and devices wired to one controller), d stands for disk within this box and s stands for slice on the disk itself.

If 't' is missing, you can safely assume you're working with ATA devices.

Hello SteamingCold,

I have a good pdf file that really answers your questions. I do not know how to get it to you. Is it possible on this website to post to each other? I could send you my email address.

I also recently changed my partitions with format etc. according to that file.

greetings,

P_ter
