May a backup file be split?

Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-3.04 (built Jul 15 2005)

libimta.so 6.2-3.04 (built 01:43:03, Jul 15 2005)

SunOS mailserver 5.9 Generic_118558-39 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880

I have got a backup file from imsbackup which I would like to split or otherwise break into pieces. Is there a way to this?

During an imsrestore operation I always get a segmentation fault at the same message in the backup file.

Well, I've tried it with the Unix split command and it works at least for the first part. One gets an error when imsrestore gets to the end of the file, of course. Still, the message has been restored.

I would still recommend you:1. Apply current patches. We've fixed hundreds of issues since your version.2. Get a new backup. Clearly, your current backup is corrupted in some way.

Hi,

Following on from what Jay said, if imsrestore is indeed crashing, patching to the latest patchfix is definitely recommended. There were imsrestore fixes in later patch releases which I suspect will fix the restore problem you are having:

(from 118207-56)

6441637 imsrestore crashes when many IMAP flags are set on message

I believe that 118207-58 is publicly available for download.

You cannot 'split' a backup file. If in future you want smaller backup files, you can use backup groups. These allow you to backup users based on partition/username etc. Refer to the messaging server admin guide for information on how to set-up backup groups.

Shane.

Shane, thanks.

I already use backup groups based on username's first letter. Still, some of my backup files are north of 10 GB. Just now I had to restore some mailboxes in a hurry and was looking for quick solution. Well, I'm almost done now, moving the files to /tmp and restoring message by message.

Anyway, upgrading and rethinking my backup policy is on the agenda.

Siegfried
