It looks like I can remove dukes at any time, even after people have posted answers. I tried to assign more than 10 dukes, and remove more than 10 dukes using the url, but they are checking that.

Yes thats right and thats what people here usually do.

Yes, and most of us don't care about that. Most of us have posted answers in many threads where the dukes haven't been handed out. There are however some new users who gets upset when they aren't given the dukes.
I personally thinks that a simple thanks is more rewarding than some dukes, especially since it currently isn't possible to see which answer(s) that got the duke(s). (It used to be possible to see that a few years ago, I don't know why they removed it)
