How do i get input from a joypad?

Hiya, ive been studying computer science at degree level for nearly two years now, ive finally got a week off and ive done my assignments and exams!

I want to create a program which gets joypad input and i have no idea where to start. Can anyone help me? Can you import something then do isButtonPressed() or something? Where do i start?
