How can vendors still sell Java application servers ?

Hi,

Please correct me if i am wrong. I understand that we can deploy Sun Application Server Platform Edition for free in production.

If so, why would anyone still pay for Websphere or weblogic ? We are currently using weblogic and there are pressures to move to Sun AS. Is there anything that we are missing here ?

Appreciate any advise.

I'm guessing that what you are missing is the support.

when you are paying good money you hope to get to support if ang critical problem occurs.

more than this webSphere and webLogic have a lot of advantages: they have a nice admin console for a multiple servers admin environment.

they have a real good cluster environment and high availability support

and also have specific add ons(be carful when using it cause you are locking yourself)

in any case if you want an open source application server I would go on JBOSS. I had a good experience with it.

How about stability ?

You brought up a good point on clustering and HA. Think I better go find out if they are present in Sun AS.

I understand that I can also buy support from SUN as well.

I am currently using BEA WLS, any good reason to move to SUN AS ? or am i better off with BEA ?

Why not using Jboss, JBOSS AS is one of the leading JAVA AS and now its owned by redhat so you can get support if you want it,

I would prefer using a AS that is more common in the market, so you will not be the first one to bump into problems.

I worked with JBOSS and Websphere, and i think that for a small env jboss is better if you are going to manage a lot of servers I thinkg that websphere is better.

Yes, we have clustering and high availability support in both Glassfish and our SUN Application Server product. You can find more information here :

Wow... any forum users _actually_ deployed a production system using Sun Application Server ?

I am still unable to rationalise how BEA and IBM can continue to sell their AS if Sun is giving them away for free. Of course, companies still need to buy support, but that's besides the point.
