New Sun DS System Migration Path
For the last 6 months we have been running Sun DS 5.2 on Linux RH ES 3. We want to develop 2 new systems so that they will be the production systems and the current production systems will become the test systems.
When we developed the system DS 5.2 was the latest and greatest.
Is it recommended that we continue on 5.2 or is a newer version
desirable ? What is the migration path expected for this product ?
We will probably want to upgrade the RH OS also.....

As I understand it, DS 6.0 will be out very soon.
DS 6.x will most likely be the last Sun directory server based on the Netscape/iPlanet DS source.
If you have time to wait and do another testing period with 6.0, you might find you like it better than 5.2... up to you.
If you want to stick with 5.2, an earlier post in this forum indicated 5.2_Patch_5 is also coming out soon.

I think 5.2 is officially supported only on RHEL 3. Latest RHEL3 version is update 8 (RHEL3u8).
6.0 will also be supported on RHEL 4.

Correct, but a 6.1 is already being worked on and should be out in a few months.
6.2 is already being planned...

The core server for DS 6.0 is really a small evolution of 5.2 core server.
DS 6.0 really bring major changes in the Administration framework: new console UI (web based), new CLI, new JMX monitoring...
Migration from 5.2 to 6.0 does not require a full export and re-import of the database.

In a Nutshell, the plan is to do mostly bug fixes, enhancements in CLI and GUI, performance improvements, database compaction feature and the Web Console deployable as a War file. The plan is subject to change... as always :-)Ludovic.
