Perhaps camickr is just a bot that:

1. Tracks cross-postings and marks the OP as rude and banishes him from further consideration.

2. Tracks code without tags and that if postCount>=20, outputs that after postCount posts you should learn to use code tags. Then marks the OP as rude and banishes him from further consideration.

3. If no main method found in the posting, asks for SSCCE and marks the OP as rude and banishes him from further consideration.

4. If at least one of previous post by the same OP didn't have lengthy thanks for all the replies, marks the OP as rude and banishes him from further consideration.

Just kidding, camickr, keep up the good work :)

no, wait, you might be on to something here... does anyone actually know camickr? And if you do, are you sure it's really camickr or someone who wants to be camickr (there are plenty of them in here).

if camickr is "watching", here is my SSCCE:

public class CamickRBlacklistPrevention {

public static void main(String[] args) {

System.out.println("thanks for the help, camickr");

}

}

Actually, a bot like that sounds like a good idea. I only read posts that look like they might be interesting, which is a very small percentage of them. If the subject is something totally uninformative like "Java question" or "URGENT!!! Please help!!!!!!", I usually don't bother to open it to find out what the actual question is. If I do open a thread, only to see a large chunk of unformatted code, I'm likely to bail out without trying to decipher it. And if I see a new post from someone I know to be incurably clueless, I might read it for its entertainment value, but I usually won't bother trying to answer the question.

So camickr is providing a valuable service by trying to educate these people, but it's a big job. It should't be that difficult to write a bot that can recognize obvious n00b mistakes (no

tags, too many exclamation points, etc.) and post a canned response. And over time it could learn to identify the hopeless cases and the trolls and plonk them for us (or it could if we had a killfile feature, that is).

I bet this camickr guy is a real dummy and can only answer so many questions because he has been able to sponge information from everybody else who takes the time to answer questions in the forum.

Thats my basic story guys. I wanted to learn about Swing to I read the Swing tutorial, tried to answer a few postings and learned by reading everybody else solutions to the question. Once you learn a little you can think outside the box a little more and come up with solutions to other questions. So keep up the good work guys, the more you answer, the more I learn.

Thats what I love about the forum, not only do we help others, but I'm sure we all learn something at the same time.

I was just thinking that the sign up process for getting a userid is too easy. Maybe Sun needs a form and you have to agree to the following questions before you are granted a userid:

1) Do you agree to read the API before asking a question?

2) Do you agree to read the tutorials before asking a question?

3) Do you agree to search the forum to see if you question has been asked previously?

4) Do you agree to post a SSCCE with your questions instead of saying "my code doesn't work"?

5) Do you agree to use the "Code Formatting Tags" when posting your SSCCE?

6) Do you agree to respond to every question you post to indicate whether the suggestion given was helpfull or not?

7) Do you agree to use the "Preview" button when you post a question to make sure the question is readable?

8) Do you agree not to cross-post and multi-post?

,,,,

I'm definitely living in a dream world :-)

However most people are receptive to suggestions which is why I keep trying.

that was a good read!! thanks

but the questions still remains camickr is not a bot!!! that much is semi fact? the question is how do they keep up with the postings? like as they happen? any way you guys are amazing!

so really the question still comes in to play what do you guys do all day? camickr and there are a few others!! like watch the http://forum.java.sun.com/ URL and look for updates?

I get email replies to any posting I answer. So if I'm at my computer and not doing anything important I can respond as they come in.

For newly posted question I just refresh the forum whenever I have time and feel like I want to answer some questions.

You can actually have an email sent to you whenever anything new is posted in a given forum, but that would be far to disturbing as you would get an email every minute or less. I just like to browse the topic titles and take a look at those that interest me.

> Just curious, does Sun employ forum watchers?> No.But then they don't even remove trolls, and allow them to re-register immediately when they eventually do.

I agree with Nibur that some guys in here are really amazing! I wish I had the time to read every day and eventually write some answers here because I agree with camickr that you can learn a lot by doing so....

And I guess a lot of people are very curious what the "superstars" in here are doing the whole day. And WHY they take the time to answer our "stupid questions"?!?!? I cannot believe that e.g. you, camickr, (and many others!) can learn anything here... Maybe something about the human psyche but nothing about swing! But I am very glad about your contribution here.
