Ultra 2 processor upgrade issue

Hello -

I've just finished upgrading my Ultra 2 from two 300mhz processors

to two 400mhz processors. PROM recognises new processors

but memory initialization (2GB) does not commence,

cannot access 'ok' prompt,. and boot stalls indefinitely.

Motherboard ID is high enough for upgrade as per documentation.

Flash PROM successfully updated. jumpers as per doco correctly set.

Machine is Model EP071235-G.

Anyone have knowledge of/ solution to this issue? Please advise.

Very grateful for any help.

Hello Les,

reseat the memory modules and cpu's. If this doesn't fix the problem, strip down the system to a bare minimum (single CPU, first bank of memory) and attach a serial console (other Sun system or PC with Teraterm or terminal emulation of your choce). You can temporarily enable diagnostics by pressing STOP + D on the Sun keyboard during power-on. Even with a Sun keyboard attached the diagnostics output is directed to the serial console port.

Are these cpu's the correct parts (501-5237,501-5541 or 501-5445 each with 2MB Cache) ? Those with 4MB are unsupported.

Hi Michael -Many thanks for your kind reply. The processors are indeed wrong, 501-5420 for use in Sun Ultra AXmp which seems to be a motherboardfor other OEMs, Polywell the only one which came up on google.Les

Hello Les,

501-5420 for use in Sun Ultra AXmp which seems to be a motherboard for other OEMs, Polywell the only one which came up on google.

The 501-5420 is a module with 4MB Cache. Maybe you can swap the module with someone who owns one of these SPARCengine Ultra AXmp/mp+. These rackmount systems (upto 4 400MHz (mp)/480 MHz (mp+) cpus, 2GB (mp)/4 GB (mp+) RAM) are not very common (compared with the E420R).
