Sun Blade 100 cant boot from cd - drive spins up then reboots and nothing

Hello all,

I recently got a Sun Blade 100 from a place that was giving away some.

The drive was wiped, and the cdrom drive was bad. I replaced it with one lying around and when i try to do a "boot cdrom - nowin" with burned solaris 10 media the top of the screen gets garbled and I get a bad magic number error. If i do a "boot cdrom" the drive spins up, and the machine reboots to the open firmware with the bad magic number error.

Any ideas ? Is the machine bad or should I try a new drive ? Also if I do a test-all it seems to hang when testing the usb subsystem.

Swap out the IDE optical drive, even if for a temporary experiment.

The original drives in the SB100's would just spontaneously stop working.

Jumper your replacement to match however the original is jumpered.

"bad magic number" ?

The hard drive was likely wiped in a brute force fashion

removing every vestige of partition and formatting info,

and simply needs proper setup.

Google for "bad magic number" and search these forums for it.

It's been discussed a bazillion times.
