compiling java servlet class

when I compile i can't do anything in a servlet class. and im supposed to for class. can anyone give me some pointers. on how to install a servlet class or more over find a file to install.

im running Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9 on my computer as a test server

then for school they have some old server thats running java 1.4
