Java ASP Causes vps to crash
i would be very greatful if someone could help me. heres my problem.
i have a linux VPS with 256mb memory and plesk 8 installed
i recently purchased SUNONE ASP and ask my server company to install it for me. (im a newbie to running my own server).
they finally installed it but had problems trying to get a test website working, saying that it was down to the version of plesk and that it needed to be upgraded to version plesk 8.1 (is this true!). after several weeks and the new plesk 8.1 installed they got it working and charged my ?17 and said that given the hours they spent on it, the bill should be greater, but they will count it as a test case as they have never installed sun one ASP before.
anyway, after a week of sunone ASP working my VPS started crashing frequently and my websites, both asp and php started to fail. not to menthion plesk.
after reporting the issue to my server they said that my VPS package needs to be upgraded to 1gb memory because sunone ASP requires 768mb memory and it was due to sunone ASP that the server was crashing.
is this true, how much memory does SUNONE ASP require to operate?
Also they said they havnt installed this before and im wondering if they have installed it correctly? how would i know?
I hope this makes sense and if anyone could give me some advice or would be willing to look at my server for me, i would much appeciate it.
Thanks
Lee

I've never used it on VPS (has anyone?). Not sure why upgrading plesk would make any difference it is after all only a admin front end to my knowledge, I guess it may have some support for configuring asp on unix - does it?
What really matters is the linux version, asp version installed and the apache version, you don't mention what these are.
If it ran for a week fine, how did you/they diagnose it is asp's fault? It could be plesk or anything else that was upgraded or fiddled with, or just a general server fault that would have happened anyway - from what I've seen of vps and plesk its not that reliable.
As for memory there is nothing I can find in the manuals regarding this and I've never heard of it.
I have under my desk a 500Mhz PC with Linux 9 on it, running asp quite happily with 128M of memory. Granted its not doing a great deal but it is working, sits there quite happily day in day out, so the 1Gb requirement seems a bit strong.
If I where you I would ask my hosting company to prove it by giving you the extra memory for say a month, if it works fine you'll to pay for it, if not then they will have to think again.

thanks for your reply.
Im new to having my own server. i had a resellers account before but had speed issues forcing me to upgrade to VPS. Am not sure what versions are on my VPS, is this any help.
Plesk version psa v8.1.0_build81061129.22 os_CentOS 4.2
Operating system Linux 2.6.9-023stab033.7-enterprise
memory 256ddr2
my hosting company said the reason for the error/problems was that SUNONE ASP was causing my VPS to reach its limits (memory etc) and that i would need to upgrade to their 1gb memory VPS.
I wasnt sure to believe them, i thought they might be trying to get more money from me. plus they said they had never installed this before? So i thought they may not have configue it correctly.
Is there no way to test how much memory SUNONE ASP uses.
I will, like you suggested ask them for a 1 month trial on a greater VPS.
Also like i mentioned early im a complete novice when it comes to running a server, however i hope to in the future have my own server which i could run myself and cut out the VPS fees. Is it hard to do? and what sort of connection do i need to have?
Thankyou very much for your time.

Definitely a memory issue.
You have to remember that total memory is being used by the entire
VPS system, which includes
Plesk, MySQL, and if you are also running Spamassassin - that alone
uses up around 128MB. Plus in addition you are running a Java
Application (SUN ASP).
So in reality you would need the 1GB as recommended. So with
that much memory required, you might as well consider a dedicated
server.
