OpenOffice 2.0.3 and Star Office 8 in the same system ?

I have OpenOffice 2.0.3 and Star Office 8 (product update 5) installed in Mandriva Linux 2007.

When I try to update Open Office to version 2.0.4 I download this file

openoffice.org-2.0.4-2.1mdv2007.0.i586

and when I install it I get this error message:

Si ?verificato un problema durante l'installazione:

file /usr/bin/soffice from install of openoffice.org-2.0.4-2.1mdv2007.0 conflicts with file frompackage staroffice-desktop-integration-8.0.3-6

It seems the two packages can't coexist.

Do anyone know if there's a way to update OO ?

Only install desktop integration for whichever you want to be your "primary" Office package. Both can exist on a system just fine, but only one can have the desktop integration installed...

This is very interesting. If it's not too complicated can you explain me what desktop integration do ?Anyway I don't install myself this desktop integration, it is installed during SO or OO installation, I have no choice. Then the question is: can I simply delete the file?

I'm not certain exactly what all is included in desktop integration. I think it has to do with setting up file association and perhaps right-click menus to default to that office application?

Anyways, when I install OO or SO, it warns about potential conflicts and then asks for each package if I want to go ahead or not. I just say "no" when the desktop-integration package conflict pops up. How are you doing the install? I just use pkgadd/patchadd.

I don't remember the "warning" during installation.

I check what happens removing staroffice-desktop-integration-8.0.3-6.

After that the menu item I create manually to open SO8 don't have anymore the icon and it open OO in place of SO8 also if it call "soffice". If I try the command "soffice" in terminal nothing happens. I think I will reinstall SO8.

I found a "soffice" in /opt/staroffice8 and calling it with menu item SO8 opens. I forgot this simple solution.

I'm still without icon for men?but this isn't a big problem.
