Minimum Solaris OS for SunFire V210 1.33Ghz CPU

Hi,

I have checked Sunsolve and it is mentioned that the minimum requirement would for Solaris 8 would be HW 07/03 (requires mandatory patch 109885-15).

My existing server runs on Solaris 8 HW 5/03.

Do I need to upgrade to HW 07/03 to support the 1.33Ghz CPU?

What are the steps that need to be taken?

Thank you very much.

Hello,

Do I need to upgrade to HW 07/03 to support the 1.33Ghz CPU?

Yes. The required kernel support was added in Solaris 8 HW 7/03. This version is also called Solaris 8 PSR3 (PSR=Platform Specific Release). These PSRs don't necessarily add new features, but are released to support new platforms/cpus (in this case the 1.33GHz cpu).

If you try to boot an unsupported release (e.g. Solaris 8 HW 5/03 =PSR2), it can't locate the proper kernel and ask for the path to the kernel (which is indeed not available on this boot media).

You may try to apply the kernel patch 108528-22 before upgrading to the 1.33GHz cpu. This is the initial kernel version of Solaris 8 HW 7/03.

The latest PSR is Solaris 8 2/04 (PSR4) with kernel patch 108528-29.

You can review InfoDoc 46808 (Solaris default kernel (patch) versions).

Note: I'm not sure if PSR is Platform Specific Release or Product Specific Release.

Hello Michael,

I have checked the InfoDoc 46808 that you mentioned and PSR stands for Product Specific Release.

PSR includes new kernel patch and *maybe* new features?

As you mentioned, these PSRs don't necessarily add new features, so if I just want to support the latest hardware, a kernel patch update will suffice?

Thank you very much.

Hello,

my suggestion to apply only the single kernel patch 108528-22 (and 109885-15 of course) was only to try if this is suficient to boot with the 1.33Ghz CPU installed. If it fails you have to downgrade to the former cpu and this is to risky.

If you want to keep the system (hardware and software) under service contract coverage, there is no choice: Update the system to Solaris 8 7/03 (or later). By installing only the two patches you may miss the ones that Solaris 8 7/03 includes.

I would strongly suggest to open a service case. These forums are only user-to-user, not official Sun support.

Probably I'm completely wrong, who knows ?

I have checked the InfoDoc 46808 that you mentioned and PSR stands for Product Specific Release.

I was using another copy (a spreadsheet starting with SunOS 4.0.2 and upto Solaris 10 11/03). This is my private quick reference to lookup kernel patch versions, because a lot of people never apply (kernel) patches or update their Solaris version ...

Hello,I have opened a service case with Sun. They recommend that I apply the required patch stated in Sun System Handbook before upgrading the OS to HW 07/03 or later by booting from CD and choosing the upgrade option. Thanks for the assistance and reply.
