jre_1_5.0_10 error 1722

I'm on my umpteenth attempt at installing this prog, using both the online or offline installers. I've tried all the solutions offered earlier - including uninstalling this and all earlier versions, scrubbing the registry of any mention of "sun" and "java" (followed by reboot), manually registering the dll's and installing to a non-default directory without success. The install registers but crashes at the end of the status with the error "cannot obtain version information from the directory" followed by the usual 1722 error from the package.

System is WinXP SP2 with all updates to yesterday, running IE7, Opera 9.1 and Firefox 2.0.0.1.

Anyone come up with any definitive solutions (other than dumping java in it's entirety - which is very tempting)?

Since you haven't recieved any replys as of yet... I thought I might chime in. I too have installed/uninstalled Java. I have now installed every update 1-10 for Java 5.0 .... rebooting after each install.

I'm getting an error that says... Unable to Load Run Time Environment.

Can't seem to find a solution from online searches.... or from Sun Netwrks yet.

A normal uninstall can (and usually does) leave stuff behind, notably Windows Installer files (*.msi), which have been known to cause later problems.

After uninstalling all Java versions you might look in your \Documents and Settings\Local Settings[this is a hidden directory]\Application Data, which may contain some leftover directories with "funny" UUID names that contain Microsoft Installer files.

Also check your \Documents and Settings\Application Data\Sun\Java directory, which may contain directories about deployment and Java versions.

Also check WINDOWS\Installer for Java .msi files.

Tooltips that popup when the file is highlighted in Windows Explorer are useful in identifying the files.

Exercise caution if you decide to delete any directories or files.

Hi all,

got totally fedup with the lack of response from SunSupport and did a complete reinstall of Windows. This has, of course, cured the java problem 'cos I've only got 1.50_10 on the system now.

Seems a little strange that Sun retains old versions that can totally **** things up - IMO Sun should go for an uninstall-install solution.

Sun support for Java (a free product) is not free. If you care to pay, they have a number of options available.

A part of me agrees with you about Java versions - if all that one needed was a single version. However, there are many older Java applications that depend on older Java versions, and there are many companies that use Java programs that require these different versions and they have to be installed simultaneously.

Forcing everyione to the current version is like Microsoft forcing everyone to Vista - although, since they can charge an arm and a leg for it, they'd love to see that be the case!

I am a complete beginner when it comes to the innermost workings of computers, but having gone around in the same circles as everyone else I felt the need to share the way I solved this extremely annoying problem, that had previously done nothing but increase my vocabulary of unsuitable words.

When I tried to install Java and tried to use the custom option to put it into another folder I found that it tried to install itself into Programs/Java (if my slashes are the wrong way-just give up on me and know that you know the right way to do it!) Instead I discovered a Java folder in Windows and installed it there-SUCCESS on the very first try.

Of course there is no guarantee that it will ever work again, but if anyone gets any benefit from this idea then I'm glad I could help.

(I had tried a registry cleaner before hand but it made no difference.)
